The Shofar- More than meets the eye
The word "Shofar" in Hebrew comes from a root word meaning beauty. In modern days it has
come to mean simply a horn that is made from some type of animal horn to most people. If one is to
explore the original meaning, one would learn that it means to "incise". Incising would indicate that
the shofar or it's sound has the effect of burning or cutting into the heart and very soul of people.
Thus, we can see that there is a lot more to the shofar than meets the eye.
Lets look first at the construction of the shofar. The shofar can be made from many
different types of animal horns such as the gazelle, goat,or sheep, but it should never be constructed
from the horn of a cow. We will explore the reason for this in another study. Most often however,
the shofar is made from the horn of a ram. It is believed that this is in remembrance of the ram that
God provided in the sparing of Issac's life when Abraham was going to take his only son's life in
obedience to God's command.
Some of the uses of the shofarand the sounds it makes are:
1. The sound of the shofar grabs the attention of those who hear it.
2. stirs a heart to repentance -in contrast to the harp which is also mentioned several times
in the Bible, which calmed and soothed the soul and spirit.
3. It was sounded as a war cry or alarm
4. It is a sign of God's presence
5. It was used to break barriers
6. It was used to assemble the people together
There are of course other important uses of the shofar such as in religious ceremonies,
Shabbat(Sabbath), and Festival observances. This is in no way an exhaustive list.
In present day life it would be easy to say that the shofar is no more than a glorified horn,
a relic of some ancient culture but as believers in the Jewish Messiah our Lord Yeshua(Jesus) it is of
great importance than the believer rethink this. The Christian faith owes much to the Jewish people,
especially given our Judeo-Christian roots.
Bringing it home to us today in it's simplest form and meaning we can say that even today
the sound of the shofar should stir our heart to repentance, it should should alert us to the fact that
we need to change anyways in us that may be displeasing to the Lord. Further, it is an alarm, that
we need to look ahead and see the things that are heading our way. We should be reminded also
to declare war on the enemy and take back precious things he has stolen from us in the name of
our Lord.
Like in days of old, the sound of the shofar is able to break down barriers and walls that
have long hurt and held us back . The results of the blowing of the shofar are two-fold: 1:We His
people tremble before the Lord(an emotional response), and 2. We draw closer to God(action
response). This can all be taken literally and or figuratively, symbolically . However, one would be
wise to take in as all three. Let us not forget that in between stimulus and response is choice, we
each need make our own.

Messianic Perspectives
Today there are Messianic Jews who already believe that Jesus is the
Messiah. The national stock of Israel will join these Messianic Jews,
but not until the “fullness of times” or when the last person is saved
prior to Christ’s return as King of kings and Lord of lords. That time
appears to be fast approaching. Jerusalem means “king of” (Jeru)
“peace” (Salem). Jerusalem is anything but peaceful right now but the
King of Peace is coming. Until then, believers ought to be praying for
the peace of Israel and for the King of Peace to come soon. Even so
Lord, come quickly. That is my prayer and I hope you will join me in
praying for His Kingdom to come and for the peace of Jerusalem

The message remains the same!
In the days of the prophet Isaiah his message was for God's people to turn back to the Lord! to be watchmen on the wall! Today over a thousand years later the message remains the same. Today, we too need to step into our role as watchmen. We need to be informed, awake, and alert! so that we can see the things that are coming at us, so that we can be ready to sound the alarm!
